Call for application for 1 PhD candidate in Economics
(Economic Geography, Geography of Innovation, Economics of Innovation, Innovation Studies)
1. Sciences-Po Toulouse
Sciences-Po Toulouse is a French High School which educates future professionals that are called upon to work in a multicultural environment in executive positions, in both the public and the private sectors, whether in France or anywhere in the world. Sciences-Po Toulouse develops a large extent of research in Political Sciences, Economics, Law and Sociology, and hosts academics involved in many international research projects and networks.
2. Toulouse
Toulouse is the fourth largest town in France and the second largest university centre in France. This academic and university environment favours research in social sciences, engineering, and bio and earth sciences. Toulouse is among the leaders in electronics and computing fields and also the European capital of aeronautics and space industries. Thanks to its ideal geographical location and atmosphere, Toulouse is one of the best French city to live in, close to the Mediterranean sea (1h30), the Atlantic ocean (2h30) and the Pyrenees (1h).
3. The Bernard Maris Unesco Chair, and the PhD student affiliation and supervision
Sciences-Po Toulouse hosts the Bernard Maris Unesco Chair which offers a 3-years doctoral position starting the 1st of November 2018. The doctoral student will be affiliated to the LEREPS lab in the “network and innovation” program, and supervised by Prof. Ron Boschma (University of Utrecht, University of Stavanger and Sciences-Po Toulouse) and Prof. Jérôme Vicente (Sciences-Po Toulouse – University of Toulouse). The candidate will work in Toulouse, with the possibility to have short- and medium-term stays in Utrecht. The PhD project will be run in collaboration with the Region Occitanie that is one of the main funding bodies and the main policy actor of regional innovation strategies.
4. Discipline and proposed Research Subjects
One PhD position is proposed in Economics. The proposed research topics are:
- Regional transition and resilience
- Innovation networks and regional dynamics
- Innovation, inclusion, inequalities and growth in a regional and urban context
- Entrepreneurship, institutions and geography of innovation
- Clusters and innovation policy, smart specialization
The PhD project should focus on a number of these key topics (not necessarily all), in consultation with the supervisors.
5. Eligibility Criteria / Prerequisites
To be considered eligible to apply the following criteria have to be met by the applicant:
- Master’s degree (preferably in Economics, Economic Geography or related fields) or equivalent academic qualification enabling to doctoral studies in France
- A master thesis strongly related to the above-mentioned topics, or at least a solid background in Economics, Geography and Economics of Innovation
- Quantitative and qualitative research skills, and a taste for multidisciplinary research
- Good English and French language skills
- Willingness to work in an inter-cultural and international environment
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Curiosity and self-motivation
6. We offer
- Three-year (fixed term) employee contract at Sciences-Po Toulouse, extensible to four years under specific and selective conditions.
- Salary: 1,600 euros net with 64h of teaching per year, 1,400 euros net without teaching activities

8. Selection Process
